In case you have not noticed, it’s back to school time! School supplies are front and center in all of the stores. Workers have been busily preparing newly waxed floors to welcome students back to their halls of learning. And traffic is increasing after a summer of easier commutes comes to an end. As we think about all of the back to school activities and focuses, we can’t forget about the millions of college students that are descending upon our college towns over the next few weeks. These young adults are finding their … [Read more...]
What Pokemon Go Teaches Us About Millennials
Pokemon Go became an instant success just days after it's release. What can we learn about the young adults who are a part of this new trend? 1. They like to re-imagine the past. Millennials were born between early 80s and mid 90s. Pokemon began in 1995 as a Game Boy game and held popularity until the early 2000s. This was their childhood! Only, now the game is played using their smartphone and involves real life locations. When it comes to the church and millennials, these same principles seem to apply. Hymns are rearranged … [Read more...]

The Middle of the Night Phone Call
There are so many joyful occasions that we get to celebrate with those in our group as leaders of young adult ministry in our churches. Graduations, new jobs, and weddings are just a few. And believe me, young adults love for you to celebrate with them! As young adult ministry leaders, however, we also have opportunities to walk alongside young adults when the hard questions of life surface due to the death of a family member or friend, the loss of a job, or other heartbreaks that result in crisis. When a young adult calls in the … [Read more...]
Do You Have Time to Read This?
Fact: Young adults lead very busy lives! Between work, relationships, family, and hobbies there seems to be very little time to spare for young adults these days. The reality of life today is that things are simply busy! How can we as young adult ministry leaders bring a sense of calmness or peace to our lives in a culture that seems to value busy? Who Have I Given Up On?
There are times when my own lack of faith frustrates me. Recently, I had the opportunity to share the gospel with a young man seated on a plane next to me. I got to ask him some questions about his beliefs and where he is in areas of faith. When I left the plane and headed toward baggage claim, I thought to myself, There’s no way this guy will ever come to Christ. He had expressed extreme disdain and hatred toward the church. So, I prayed for him and asked the Lord to show Himself to this young man – but I’m not sure I really … [Read more...]
Testing
Jesus persevered even when His faith was questioned. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Luke 4:10-12 Satan went for the jugular at the end. He asked Jesus if He really believed that God was God and that God would actually take care of Him. When have you questioned whether God was really going to take care of you? … [Read more...]

God’s Design For Our Relationships Isn’t Just Perfect—It’s Beautiful
God created us to function according to His perfect design, and for all of human history our world has been male and female. But our ever-changing culture faces challenges due to sin. More than ever the church needs to be a safe refuge for the gender confused, the sexually broken, the single, the married, and the divorced. In Matt Chandler's new study, A Beautiful Design, he gives evidence that God’s plan for man and woman is the ultimate design. And life lived within this beautiful and unchanging design is part of God's greater … [Read more...]
How to Tie a Tie
This past week a man that I’ve known since I was a kid went to be with the Lord. Mr. Jim was my neighbor when I was growing up and our family went to church with him. More importantly, Mr. Jim taught me how to tie a tie. When I was in middle school I was involved with school activities that required me to wear a tie. My dad never wore a tie so he encouraged me to go to Mr. Jim to see if he could teach me how to tie the perfect knot. One afternoon, I went to Mr. Jim’s house. After pulling out two ties for us to practice with, he … [Read more...]
