10 Myths About Forgiveness — (Part 1)
I thought forgiveness was a safe topic for my small group to discuss. Boy was I wrong! While serving as the college minister at my church several years ago, I chose the content for our large group gathering. We had come to the end of the curriculum we were using, so I found another series which included an extended discussion of forgiveness. I was not prepared for their response. Every person in the discussion group I was leading (all of whom had been relatively quiet over the previous few weeks) became "passionately-engaged" in … [Read more...]
The Agape Love of God
In the parable of the lost son (Luke 15:11-32), Jesus described how the father extends extravagant grace to both the rebellious, sinful younger son and the arrogant, self-righteous elder brother. The father's love for his selfish sons illustrates the very nature of God. In Greek, there are several words for love, including eros, meaning romantic, sensual love; philia, friendly, brotherly love; and agape, unmerited, self-sacrificing love. The love of God is agape, the kind of unfailing, undeserved love that compelled the Creator of … [Read more...]
Peace for the Journey
Sheep get a bad rap. They tend to be followers. If one jumped off a bridge, there’s a good chance the others would too. Without the shepherd, the sheep are helpless. Sheep know the sound of their shepherd calling, and they respond because they are dependent on the shepherd to give them guidance and keep them safe. They have a devotion to their shepherd. When the shepherd calls, they respond. David, the author of much of the Book of Psalms, was a shepherd. He knew the intimate relationship he had with his sheep. He knew they … [Read more...]
Making Disciples Who Make Disciples: the University of Oklahoma BCM story
This past week, I was at the Southern Baptist Convention in Columbus, Ohio. All of us here at Lifeway Young Adults are proud of the partnership we have with collegiate ministries all over North America through local churches and campus-based ministries. One highlight of the convention was a video that focused on the importance of making disciples among college students. A hero among many in the collegiate ministry world is Max Barnett, who started at University of Oklahoma Baptist Student Union with a vision of making disciples. The … [Read more...]

7 Ways to Pray for Your Future Spouse
I recently completed a 37,000 mile prayer pilgrimage around the world. I met the Pope, danced with rabbis, hung out with monks, walked on coals, and revived my prayer life. While I was in Italy, I visited a hulking hilltop monastery called Monte Cassino, the place of a massive World War II battle. Monte Cassino was built over 1000 years ago by a guy named Benedict. Benedict founded a number of monasteries all over Italy, and wrote a book that became the gold standard for Western monastic movements all over the planet. … [Read more...]

A Different Kind of Karaoke
Have you ever had an experience where you felt like you had to change who you were to fit in socially? For me, that experience was high school. The angst, stress and pressure to make things work within the social scene was overwhelming at times. I had my church friends, my baseball teammates, my co-workers, my classmates, and other groups I was trying to navigate. On a regular basis, I felt like I had to wear a mask and shift who I was to fit into these groups. True friendship, unlike what I just described, enables us to live … [Read more...]
How Can We Live Lives of Authenticity?
Buzzwords. They're everywhere. If you work in the business world, you might hear buzzwords like "synergy," "move the needle," "drill down," or "best practices." In the church world, you might hear phrases like "relevant," "missional," or "creative." When I graduated from college and took my first job working at a church, the word “authenticity” reached buzzword status. It had been spoken to the point that the meaning and value of the word was deluded. While the buzzword is still true and relevant, listeners have begun tuning it … [Read more...]
