Fruit trees blossom in April. Every type of fruit tree requires specific work to encourage fruitfulness. You can over- or under-prune, over- or under-fertilize, and over- or under-water. The tree needs right conditions to flourish. The same applies to you and me. We need right conditions to flourish.
Leviticus 26:3-10 spells out that holiness leads to right conditions for fruitfulness. The Israelites depended on a good harvest. They needed rain, good soil, well-tended fields, and healthy livestock. Likewise, their safety was always up in the air. In the ancient world, the strong nations always prevailed, and Israel lived in contention with aggressive neighbors. God assured Israel that He would watch her back as long as she abided by His statutes. God promised that holy living in relation to Him would lead to stability.
Pay close attention to the delicate balance of holiness in life. We can’t be idle or passive. Nor can we ignore God’s holy statutes and expect good things to come our way. For those who tend the condition of their souls according to God’s ways, there is a promise of fruitfulness. (Not monetarily – that was the Old Testament covenant. Our New Testament covenant provides fruitfulness for our souls.)
