Separating from society’s influence is really about having a proper world view. When we let culture instead of Jesus influence us, we move toward sin. Right now, Western nations hold debates on human rights, abortion, legalization of certain drugs, gay marriage, and more. Where are those debates leading us? Where do we stand? Will we capitulate to the pressure or stand on God’s truth?
Leviticus 18:20-26 is God’s warning to Israel about sin. God predicted the influences of Egypt and Canaan would bewitch His people, leading the nation to sinful behavior on a personal and national scale. God warned Israel against distorted human sexuality. He also cautioned against children being victimized through religious practices. God’s bottom line: avoid the pain of sin.
We face the same dangerous progression today. Though we mentally scoff at our likelihood of falling into sin, the fact is we are only one decision away from making terrible mistakes. God mentioned sexual aberrations and child abuse in Leviticus 18, but there are innumerable ways we can sin against God, others, and ourselves. The battle for holiness is real, and the best way to fight is to intentionally separate ourselves from sin.
