More options exist for you today regarding education, career, relationships, and experiences than for any prior generation. You possess a burning desire to make your life significantly count, and you don’t want to get it wrong. You might be hesitant to committing to life’s decisions due to distrusting the future. You’re afraid of messing it up.
Many people are fearful of making wrong decisions, thus distorting God’s entire plan for their lives. Some people—especially young adults—believe God has mapped out every twist and turn of their lives like a game board. Every decision they make is another roll of the dice. And if they make the wrong decision, there’s no way to win the game. But this is an unhealthy understanding of God’s will and plan for your life. The Bible doesn’t reveal a turn-by-turn plan that must be individually discovered. Instead, more often than not, God asks us to be faithful with what we’ve been given and honor Him with what we do.
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for God’s glory” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17).
Then, through prayer and wisdom from others, we do the next thing. The Bible gives far more instruction on how to live today than how to discover the plans for tomorrow. Even Jesus calls our attention away from placing too much emphasis on the future.
Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34).
Now this doesn’t minimize the gravity some decisions can have. It does safeguard us, though, from overthinking or over-spiritualizing our lives. God has given us wisdom, His Word, and the Holy Spirit. With these divine resources in our grasp, God gives us great freedom and ability to make life’s decisions. In fact, we honor God by making them. God isn’t glorified in fear-based hesitancy, but in wisdom-filled action instead. It’s time to overcome reluctance and trust God with our future.
