Over the weekend, we've seen images of the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey in communities across Texas. Our hearts break for those in the pathway of storms and extensive flooding. And if you are anything like me, you want to do SOMETHING. One key essential of young adult ministry is responsibility. Young adults desire to be a part of something that is a making a significant impact in the world. As leaders, we can miss out on a key component of young adult ministry if we do not provide ways for them to be a part of something … [Read more...]

Don’t Put It Off
A few days ago, I made my yearly trek to my doctor's office to get my wellness checkup. A few days prior to that I took care of giving up a few vials of blood that would give my doctor some indication of how I’m doing with all of those factors that deal with exercise, eating well, and general health issues for a guy in his mid-40s. It’s a smart thing to go see my doctor on a yearly basis to make sure everything is working properly! In fact, I’ve already got my appointment made for next year. When it comes to health, most of us will … [Read more...]
It’s Not About Convenience
Just a few days ago as I was exiting my local supermarket after picking up a few things, I failed to notice that the exit doors were NOT the automatic doors that open when someone comes near. I face-planted right into the glass door in front of several families that were coming into the store. On my most recent trip that required me to fly, I ran into the bathroom in between flights. On my way out, I stopped to wash my hands and was furiously waving my hands in front of the sink for a solid 20 seconds before I realized that it was … [Read more...]
4 Reasons Why You Need to Check Out Disciples Path: The Journey
I’m always on the lookout for resources that can help young adults understand what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and how that affects every aspect of their life. When young adults begin to embrace that following Christ is not just a part of their life, but it is their life, you’ll see a young adult that has been completely transformed for the gospel. Recently, Lifeway released a new resource called Disciples Path: The Journey. I’m convinced that young adult ministries would benefit significantly by leading their small groups … [Read more...]
Recognizing Your Role Model Status
I teach ninth grade English, and I am often reminded that my students watch what I am saying and doing constantly—probably even more so when I am not teaching a lesson about grammar or literature. Recently, I was chatting with a teacher and a former student in the hallway between classes, and somehow the topic of spending money on things we enjoy came up. I mentioned nice dinners, and my student finished my list for me, naming cupcakes with orange frosting. (I’m a sweet-eater and a Tennessee V-O-L-S fan.) My teacher friend looked … [Read more...]

Who Have I Given Up On?
There are times when my own lack of faith frustrates me. Recently, I had the opportunity to share the gospel with a young man seated on a plane next to me. I got to ask him some questions about his beliefs and where he is in areas of faith. When I left the plane and headed toward baggage claim, I thought to myself, There’s no way this guy will ever come to Christ. He had expressed extreme disdain and hatred toward the church. So, I prayed for him and asked the Lord to show Himself to this young man – but I’m not sure I really … [Read more...]
4 Gift Ideas for Graduates
Graduation season is in full swing. We’ve all seen countless pictures of graduates getting those last few moments with friends whom they have spent the previous four (or five, six, or seven) years with on their college campus. Families are having graduation parties to honor one of the most significant accomplishments their young adult has had in their lives up to that point. It's time to celebrate! So, what kind of gift do we give to these college graduates that we love so much? There are only so many copies of Oh, the Places … [Read more...]
