I spent the evening the other night with an old friend of mine. He & I used to meet each week, early in the morning, for prayer & accountability. It was one of those friendships that you really want to have with others, but most of the time fall far short of actually seeing happen. Through that mutual respect, encouragement & ‘spurring' I can absolutely say that it had a deep impact on my life, my ministry, my marriage & family life, & my spiritual journey. There really is no secret formula involved. I know I used to think so, … [Read more...]
InTransit Commentary--Week 2
So we are all waiting for something. I don’t know what your wait is about but I know that it is probably significant. It may be the next stage of life that you really can’t wait to get here. It may be finding that right person or job. It may be restoring a relationship or friendship. It may be a promise that God gave you and you don’t know how it is going to happen. I want to talk about that for a bit. I realize that the feeling of waiting is a terrible one. I usually feel really helpless. Waiting on time to go by … [Read more...]
InTransit Commentary--Week 1
When I first set out to write "InTransit" I was going through one of the biggest waiting periods of my life. The Bible study was more than something I studied academically. It was birthed out of the pains and struggles of my own life. I have learned that waiting really is about trust. Waiting is not about the time that it takes to have your dreams come true or for something you really want to come to pass - it is whether you trust God or not. That is why I love the stories of Jesus, David and Joseph as they waited on God through … [Read more...]
Beyond Hit & Run Servanthood
Young adults are increasingly spending time in ways that help others and are doing it in a variety of settings. They're serving in soup kitchens, building houses for families, and caring for orphans of AIDS victims in developing nations. Suddenly, serving has become cool. And why not? It feels good to do good. But how does service become more than an occasional project pick-me-up or a disappearing fad chase in our lives? Beyond the hip-factor, servanthood is a lifestyle of allowing God to shape our character into the likeness of … [Read more...]
The Ups & Downs of Moving Back in With Mom & Dad
Old Rule: Adults who move in with their parents are socially stilted/creepy. New Rule: Adults who move in with their parents are financially or emotionally rebuilding, even savvy. Welcome to the era of the boomerang generation-a growing segment of society that boards with Mom and Dad after age 21. What was once mocked and frowned upon has become a plausible strategy to employ. "Because so many of this generation are returning home, [boomeranging] is socially acceptable," says Dr. Susan Newman, social psychologist and author of … [Read more...]
The Source of Community
Over the last several months we (the young adults group I work with) have been studying the communal aspects of our faith - what it would/could/should look like when we pursue our faith journey in the midst of a community of other Jesus followers. It’s been a good conversation and one that I don’t think has come very easily for most of us. If you’re like me you place a high value on relationships in your life. Friends are family, and we couldn’t & really don’t want to pursue life on our own. And yet, if … [Read more...]
