There are just some groups of people that I simply LOVE to be around. College ministry leaders are at the top of that list! When a room is filled with individuals who believe the college campus is one of the most strategic mission opportunities we have as the church, you'll find a room full of vision, passion, and a whole lot of fun! If you are a collegiate minister, a collegiate church planter, or a volunteer in a collegiate ministry, you will not want to miss the Collegiate Summit conference in Hendersonville, TN (just outside of … [Read more...]
3 Ways to Connect With College Students This Summer
College students from your church and community are starting to roll back into town for a few months of summer jobs, reconnecting with high school buddies, and watching complete seasons of their favorite TV series they missed while off at college. So here are two questions for your church body to consider: What role will your church play in keeping students plugged in during the summer? Does your church have a plan for connecting with college students during the summer? Whether it’s students who are returning home for a … [Read more...]
Thoughts from a Young Adult
One of my favorite aspects of my job is that I get to meet a lot of people in a lot of different places. As I travel, I love striking up conversations with people at the airport, on the plane, in a restaurant, or in the hotel elevator. I don’t like passing up an opportunity to get to know someone new. Last week as I was on a brief layover in Minneapolis, I was sipping a cup of coffee I'd picked up on my way between gates and sat down next to a young man in his 20s. He was wearing a hoodie of a team that I’m a fan of … [Read more...]
Don’t Put It Off
A few days ago, I made my yearly trek to my doctor's office to get my wellness checkup. A few days prior to that I took care of giving up a few vials of blood that would give my doctor some indication of how I’m doing with all of those factors that deal with exercise, eating well, and general health issues for a guy in his mid-40s. It’s a smart thing to go see my doctor on a yearly basis to make sure everything is working properly! In fact, I’ve already got my appointment made for next year. When it comes to health, most of us will … [Read more...]
It’s Not About Convenience
Just a few days ago as I was exiting my local supermarket after picking up a few things, I failed to notice that the exit doors were NOT the automatic doors that open when someone comes near. I face-planted right into the glass door in front of several families that were coming into the store. On my most recent trip that required me to fly, I ran into the bathroom in between flights. On my way out, I stopped to wash my hands and was furiously waving my hands in front of the sink for a solid 20 seconds before I realized that it was … [Read more...]
Why Every Day is Like Opening Day
For every fan of Major League Baseball, Opening Day is something special. Baseball parks are spruced up. There are new rosters. Teams are a mere 162 games away from their first game in the playoffs. Opening Day is a day full of hope for every baseball fan. Opening day represents a new beginning and a lot of promise. Similarly, the impact that churches and collegiate ministries are making in the lives of college students and young adults is even more exciting. Young adult and collegiate ministry leaders have the unique opportunity … [Read more...]
Oh, the Places They Will Go
One of the most exciting aspects of young adult ministry is that you never know who’s going to show up from week to week. One of the most challenging aspects of young adult ministry is that you never know who’s going to show up from week to week. As leaders of young adult ministry, we have to accept the reality that young adults are transient. They are on the move. They love to explore and travel over a long weekend. It’s one of the characteristics that I absolutely love about being around young adults. When leading young … [Read more...]
Embrace the Urgency
There are some things that call for an urgent response. When the water pipe bursts in your kitchen and water is spewing all over the place, the best response is an urgent dash to shut the water off. If you happen upon a vehicle accident with injuries, the best response is an urgent phone call to 911. When I read the book of Acts and observe the early church’s response to Jesus’ promise that He is coming back, there's an urgency among the followers of Christ. They're intent on making sure others know the message and hope of the … [Read more...]
The Day For an Extra Cup of Coffee
If you are anything like me, you might need that extra cup of coffee today since we all lost that hour of sleep yesterday morning (except for our friends in Arizona and Hawaii). The yearly ritual of setting our clocks an hour ahead on the second Sunday of March can get our body a bit out of sync for a few days. Yet, the extra hour of sunshine in the evenings is always a welcome guest on our back porches. Since I find myself yawning and thinking of a nap on the days right after I have “Sprung forward,” it reminds me of how crucial … [Read more...]
3 Scandalous Sides to Young Adult Ministry
This past weekend I read a scandalous story. It’s a story of cheating, being taken advantage of, and losing everything. It's also one of the most wonderful stories ever told. My daily Bible reading took me to the Old Testament prophet Hosea. His story includes marrying a girl named Gomer who was promiscuous in almost every way imaginable. But Hosea loved Gomer, even when Gomer didn’t return that love. Hosea bought her back even though she was technically already his. He gave it all. She was unfaithful. He was faithful. Even in … [Read more...]
