Last week I was sitting at a local coffee shop answering emails and catching up on work responsibilities. It was mid-morning and there were several conversations going on around me. I never intentionally listen other conversations, but sometimes the talking is so loud it leaves no doubt about the topic of conversation. A real estate deal was being brokered a few tables over from me. Another guy was trying to sell a new client on why his company should be chosen to do his marketing. There were also two students discussing a project … [Read more...]
Sometimes We Just Need to Ask for a Do Over
At last Sunday’s GrammyAwards, one of the world’s most popular singers stopped mid-song and asked for a do over. Adele, who won numerous awards throughout the night, sang a tribute song for a fellow musician and things did not go the way they were supposed to. She did not stomp off stage in a rage. She did not blame the orchestra. She did not point a finger toward the technical crew. She simply owned up to the fact that she botched the song and asked if she could start over again. And there was something about what she did that was … [Read more...]
It’s More Than a Box
Every year around the end of October or first of November, my family takes an afternoon to go shopping. This shopping trip is always for a very specific purpose and must be strategic. As we shop for people that we've never met and probably never will meet, we try to think of things that they may like and will bring a smile to their faces. Oh, and it all must fit into a shoebox! This past week, I had the opportunity to do something that brought all those years of packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child to full circle. I … [Read more...]
The Easy Way Out
Last week as I was on my way to pick up my son, traffic was even worse than normal. As I sat through a stoplight that changed three times before I got to go through the intersection, I had the brilliant idea of taking a shortcut. Bad idea!! I drove down a small street through a neighborhood only to find it was closed for utility work. I turned around and took another route just as another school in the neighborhood dismissed. I was suddenly in the middle of that school’s afternoon traffic. My shortcut idea was not a wise … [Read more...]
It’s a Good Thing to Wait
I can’t say that I’ve ever run into anyone that has the hobby of waiting. Yet, there are so many parts of life that require us to take a deep breath and wait our turn. A trip to the DMV wouldn't be complete without a wait. Doctors seem to build a wait time in the waiting room as a part of our visit. Waiting is a part of life that most of us simply don’t enjoy. However, I’m convinced that waiting can make us better! As young adult ministry leaders, we have the opportunity to help those in our groups understand and embrace the … [Read more...]
No Need for a Nametag
An odd thing happened this past Christmas. I got a card from someone that I have absolutely no idea who it is. Over my 46 years of life, I’ve met a lot of people through college ministry and my job at Lifeway. I’m also just a very social being. However, after I opened the card and read the name, I could not for the life of me figure out who this person was. And I did what all of us would do – I went to Facebook to see if we were friends. That search turned up nothing. We were not connected on Facebook. I even Googled their name but … [Read more...]
Oh, Little Town of Chaos
“And Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David, to be registered along with Mary, who was engaged to him and was pregnant. While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. Then she gave birth to her firstborn Son and she wrapped Him snugly in cloth and laid Him in a feeding trough – because there was no room for them at the lodging place.” (Luke 2:4-7, HCSB) It seems that the images of Bethlehem … [Read more...]
Throw Some Confetti in Your Young Adult Ministry
“Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.” Romans 12:15 My 14-year-old son scored his first 3-pointer in a high school basketball game this past week. It would be fun to say that he made a last second shot to win a big game and got carried off the floor by his teammates. In reality, our team was losing by a significant margin. So, the coach decided to put in all of the freshman to give them some playing time and game experience. Those young guys made the most of the opportunity. When Tyler sank the “3” I may … [Read more...]
Friday Links
Here are some articles/blogs from this past week that you may have missed, but may be helpful to you as you work with young adults in your church and community. "10 Discipleship Questions to Consider Now for 2017" by Chuck Lawless The intentionality behind our personal walk with Christ is imperative. Dr. Lawless poses some very practical and important questions for us to consider as we pursue Christ in the coming year. "CoHousing: The New American Family" by Liuan Huska Huska examines the trend of “cohousing” that is … [Read more...]
4 Reasons Why You Need to Check Out Disciples Path: The Journey
I’m always on the lookout for resources that can help young adults understand what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and how that affects every aspect of their life. When young adults begin to embrace that following Christ is not just a part of their life, but it is their life, you’ll see a young adult that has been completely transformed for the gospel. Recently, Lifeway released a new resource called Disciples Path: The Journey. I’m convinced that young adult ministries would benefit significantly by leading their small groups … [Read more...]
