For some reason, we often settle for mediocre in various aspects of our life. The attitude of “just getting by” or “that should be enough” gets us a passing grade in school and sometimes our job. But, does mediocrity have any place in a growing relationship with Christ? Does it belong in a young adult ministry? As young adult ministry leaders we cannot be satisfied with mediocrity in our ministry. Instead, we should be consistently challenging young adults to a level of serving Him that takes them beyond their comfort zones or … [Read more...]
4 Tips for Keeping Young Adults Engaged in Your Church
I consistently get asked by church leaders the question, “How do we keep young adults involved in our church?” It may seem like a small word change, but the better question is, “How do we keep young adults engaged in our church?” Churches in communities from small towns to large cities desire to see young adults and young families engaged in the overall mission of the church. The excitement and perspective that young adults bring to a church can breathe fresh life into a congregation that seeks to be both relevant and gospel … [Read more...]
3 Reasons Collegiate Day of Prayer is Important for College Ministries
For over 200 years the last Thursday of February has been set aside as a day to pray for the college campus. The campus that is a few blocks from your home. The campus that is located hundreds of miles from your city in a region of our country that has very little evangelical presence. The campus where you earned a degree. Collegiate Day of Prayer has a significant history in the spiritual awakenings that have been birthed in our nation on the college campuses. That’s why Thursday, February 25, 2016 is a significant day for all of … [Read more...]

Is God’s Word my daily bread?
We called it my “Meat Party.” For my birthday last year, my husband hosted a dinner party at our house, complete with white linens, fancy drinks, a few obligatory greens, and eight enormous, juicy, salty steaks off the grill. You see, my favorite food is steak. Or, to be slightly more general, I love any hot, salty meat, really. My friends laugh and cringe a little when I say it, but anyone who knows me knows this passion of mine. I’m sure I lost a handful of you at “hot, salty meat,” but it’s the truth. For me, meat can be … [Read more...]
Following Means Growing
Our oldest son, Hayden, and I were out in the yard a few months ago. I was checking things off my project list while he accompanied me. Although his presence sometimes slows my progress, it’s well worth it. These are some of my favorite bonding moments with him. He’s so content to be out “working” with daddy, and I’m proud to have him by my side. The back of our property runs up to a neighbor’s fence. It’s a tall fence that provides complete privacy to their property, including their pool. They don’t use the pool often, and we … [Read more...]
Fear Not: Am I Living With Confidence?
Amathophobia is the fear of dust. Olfactophobia is the fear of smells. Symmetrophobia is the fear of symmetry. Just a quick Google search for “strange fears” will yield literally thousands of results. And while we might scoff at being afraid of rain or colors, much of our life is lived from a posture of fear. Experience has taught us the skill of self-protection, and while that has its place, that place is not from a posture of fear. In fact, one of the refrains that echoes over and over again through Scripture is this: “Fear not!” … [Read more...]

10 Myths about Forgiveness – Part 2
Two weeks ago, I shared about the dangerous nature of our understanding of forgiveness. Far too many of us embrace bad teaching about forgiveness. Inaccurate beliefs prevent us from experiencing the power of true forgiveness, worsening the pain we've been processing. I shared the first five myths here and today I'll be sharing the final five.
