There has been a lot of talk about truth recently. This week Facebook and other social media outlets are addressing all of the false news reports that appear on their sites. In recent weeks, numerous fact checks were completed to verify if the Presidential election candidates had all of their facts straight. It seems as though we all have this deep desire to know the truth. As you spend time with young adults in your small groups or one-on-one, key cultural topics are bound to come up in the midst of the conversation—along with a … [Read more...]

6 Reasons I’m Thankful for Young Adults
It’s the week of Thanksgiving! Bring on the turkey, the stuffing, naps while watching football, and all the traditions we enjoy during this season of gratitude. As a guy that works with college students and young adults and their leaders across North America, I want to take a moment to celebrate why I’m so thankful for the young adults in our communities and in our churches. Here is a short list of why I’m thankful I get to work alongside them and their leaders. 1. They are passionate. When young adults set their mind on … [Read more...]

Here are some articles/blogs from this past week that you may have missed, but may be helpful to you as you work with young adults in your church and community. “Five Actions that Form a Healthy Identity” by Tim Elmore In a culture that wants to determine a person’s identity through social media and other forms of reactions, Elmore examines how we can help young adults develop a healthy sense of identity based on who they are in Christ. “Evangelicals Remain Complicated” by Aaron Earls The 2016 Presidential Election is … [Read more...]
How do we Measure Ministry Success?
If you're counting heads without considering what's happening in peoples' hearts, you might not be as successful as you think. Measuring success can be tough in ministry. Attendance numbers can be helpful in some ways but those numbers alone don't mean we're accomplishing what we're aiming to accomplish. Adele just held back-to-back sold out concerts in the American Airlines Center here in Dallas. Texas high school football is in full swing packing thousands of people into stadiums all across the state. The downtown square in … [Read more...]
How to Help Young Adults Navigate the Path Ahead
I’ll admit it: I love airports. I actually enjoy having a bit of a layover in airports so that I can explore a bit. It fascinates me that each airport has it’s own distinct feel. From the art they display to the food they serve, each airport is designed to give you a better understanding of their city. You can’t miss the smell of fresh beignets in the New Orleans Louis Armstrong Airport and you get the feel that you are walking through a huge mall when you fly through the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. And, I have my … [Read more...]

Tim presents the necessity of leaders helping young adults to navigate the great possibilities of the digital age while maintaining integrity and values at the same time. “4 Things Churches Need to … [Read more...]
Don’t Worship at the Altar of Your Feelings
Gustave Flaubert, the French writer most famous for his first published work Madame Bovary once said, “One can be the master of what one does, but never of what one feels.” In other words, you can exercise some control by sheer will over your actions, but feelings? Well that’s a different story. You can’t control what you feel. And it wouldn't be a problem, except for the fact that our feelings are not to be trusted, because our hearts will lie to us over and over again. As Christians, we understand why this is so. We … [Read more...]
Do Groups Really Matter?
Anytime I'm in the presence of collegiate or young adult ministry leaders, I’m always intrigued by the conversations that surface about our ministries. “What does your large group worship time look like?” “What are some of the issues you're tackling in your group gatherings?” “What type of missions opportunities does your group do?” Are those relevant and important questions to ask? Absolutely. They're all aspects of what draws young adults to our ministries and keeps them involved with the ministry as a whole. However, … [Read more...]
Starving for God’s Word
In Matthew 4:4 Jesus says, “Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” If you go for any period of time without eating, what happens? You get hungry! If you go for a long period of time without eating food, not only would you be hungry but you would also begin to get weak. In the same way that your body needs food, your soul needs God’s Word. If you go for any period of time without it, it hungers! And if you stop feeding on God's Word for a long period of time, it gets weak. God's … [Read more...]
