Devotion time. Bible time. Quiet time. Whatever you call it, you’ve resolved this year to make enough time and set the right space aside especially for it. Thank you. Celebrate that! Time and space devoted to be with God and know Him more and better through the Bible ought to be paramount to every other time and space in our day. The hang up can come with how to do it. What practices could characterize the time to make it meaningful; to walk away feeling and knowing your life is somehow changed. There are a lot of models … [Read more...]

Christmas Gifts from the Lord
One of my favorite Christmas traditions is opening gifts on Christmas Eve as a family. I enjoy seeing paper fill the room, laughter, and teasing as we take turns opening presents; it is such a sweet time. I love the anticipation of opening gifts to see if you get what you want or what your family thinks you need. My love language is "gifts," so the Christmas season is extra fun for me. I absolutely love gifts, and it’s one of my favorite parts of Christmas. I love receiving gifts, but I get such joy giving gifts. In the Christmas … [Read more...]
Do You Leave Enough Time and Space Set Apart for God?
The year is coming to a close. 2019 was a good show. All forms of media really did it up right. Great set, great actors, great script—a real nail-biting heartstring-tugging ride. But, bring up the house lights, and amidst the standing ovation, what do we have to show for it all? We laughed. We cried. We won. We lost. We fussed about things we can’t change. We took a pass on things we can change. Day buried by day, 365 of them, back there in the rearview mirror. Some objects are closer than they appear; some memorable, some … [Read more...]
My Love-Hate Relationship with Christmas Break
The anticipation is mounting. The energy is building. The finals are finished. And, the sugar is flowing. What does all of this mean but that Christmas break is upon us! It’s the time when schools close, breaks are taken from work, and…well, if I’m honest, I still haven’t decided how I feel about the whole thing. Christmas Break, or “Winter Break,” as it has recently become known, is something with which I have a love-hate relationship. Why, in a season of “good tidings,” am I so unsure about whether or not to be excited? It … [Read more...]
Why Every Young Adult Should Know About Paul’s Trip to Athens
One of my favorite biblical passages to teach is Acts 17. It involves Paul during one of his missionary travels, and I believe it has important implications for young adults. The chapter starts with Paul and Silas in Thessalonica. They work in the city until some local opposition arises, and they must leave in a hurry for Berea. This next stop is temporary, as those individuals who opposed the ministers in Thessalonica also come to Berea to cause trouble. From there, Paul is whisked away by fellow believers to Athens, while his … [Read more...]
When You’re Not in the Christmas Spirit
Several years ago, around this time of year, I was contemplating taking down my Christmas tree early. Doing that kind of thing is not like me at all; I’m usually full of Christmas spirit and enjoy decorating my whole house, top to bottom, outside and in. The Christmas season has nearly always been a bright prospect to me, full of the promise of family, friends, sweet treats, and yes, presents. (I’m shallow enough to admit that I love gifts!) Christmas parties, music, sweaters, and especially the twinkling lights all combine to make … [Read more...]
What Do We Do with Our Spiritual Questions?
Socrates used to ask a lot of questions. The Greek philosopher believed that asking questions was the best way to teach; it inspired critical thinking about a subject to the end that the one being questioned would have a firmer and more grounded understanding of his or her position. Apparently, he was right, because people have been practicing (with great success) the Socratic method of teaching for centuries. While it’s great in a teaching atmosphere, there comes a point when you have to stop asking questions and start moving … [Read more...]

Troubleshoot Your Thanksgiving
Not everyone has the stereotypical Thanksgiving gathering. But, whatever your scenario, here are some tips on how to make the best of your holiday celebration Funds Are Limited If the thought of cooking up a four-course spread makes you wonder how you’ll pay the electric bill, don’t worry. Especially if it’s just going to be a few of you, change up the traditional Thanksgiving menu. Who needs an expensive (and expected) turkey? Go with a big pan of lasagna or meatloaf. Or be unconventional and serve a buffet of hors d’oeuvres … [Read more...]
