I can’t say that I’ve ever run into anyone that has the hobby of waiting. Yet, there are so many parts of life that require us to take a deep breath and wait our turn. A trip to the DMV wouldn't be complete without a wait. Doctors seem to build a wait time in the waiting room as a part of our visit. Waiting is a part of life that most of us simply don’t enjoy. However, I’m convinced that waiting can make us better! As young adult ministry leaders, we have the opportunity to help those in our groups understand and embrace the … [Read more...]

Broken Promises Already
Exodus 32 Imagine that you are a young man in the nation of Israel during the time when God’s people were rescued from slavery in Egypt. You grew up hearing your parents pray every night for rescue. You ran errands for Egyptian families with no payment and rarely any gratitude. You barely saw your father because he was always working on the Pharaoh’s next building project. Then one day a guy named Moses was speaking to a crowd outside your house. He said that God told him to tell the leader of Egypt to let Israel leave. You … [Read more...]

3 Ways Politeness Gets in the Way of the Gospel
I live in the South. To be clear, my family loves it here. We love our city, love the culture, and love the people. As with any region of any nation at any time, there are certain barriers to the gospel that are somewhat unique to that area. This is the land of “bless your heart” and passive aggressiveness. This is the domain of non-invasive questions and image consciousness. We, as Christians in the South (and I mean “we” since I am one), have had the tendency to think of politeness as one of the fruit of the Spirit. But while … [Read more...]
No Need for a Nametag
An odd thing happened this past Christmas. I got a card from someone that I have absolutely no idea who it is. Over my 46 years of life, I’ve met a lot of people through college ministry and my job at Lifeway. I’m also just a very social being. However, after I opened the card and read the name, I could not for the life of me figure out who this person was. And I did what all of us would do – I went to Facebook to see if we were friends. That search turned up nothing. We were not connected on Facebook. I even Googled their name but … [Read more...]

Others have picked up a new hobby for some added enjoyment to life. There are new intentions to eat better, exercise more, and keep in contact with those that we may not see too often. You May Be Too Busy to Read This Post
I am a big fan of Google Calendar. It sort of looks like a rainbow when I open it up and I look at all the meetings, trips, practices and responsibilities that I have in my life today. We all have the tendency to lean toward a life of being busy – every moment of our day scheduled to the minute. As I start a new year, I am trying to get out of the habit of saying that “I’m busy.” Busy just sounds so bland. Busy sounds like it was a lot of stuff with no purpose. Thinking about the opportunity we have to influence those … [Read more...]
